What’s the Big Deal About Dirty Air Vents Anyway?
When it comes to ensuring the air in your home is free of pollutants, keeping your air vents clean is absolutely essential. Why? For starters, the Environmental Protection Agency ranks polluted indoor air as one of the top five risks to public health and dirty vents are a large contributor to poor indoor air quality. That’s because within your air ducts are millions of particles of debris. This debris gets forced out of the air ducts via the vents, causing buildup over time.
The good news is, cleaning your vents is a simple task that doesn’t require professional help! Read on to learn how you can clean your AC vents in four steps.
What You’ll Need:
Shop-vac or vacuum
Screwdriver
Soap and water mixture
Stiff bristle brush
Cleaning Your AC Vents:
Turn off the power to your central air conditioning system at the thermostat and the breaker.
Unscrew the grilles from ceilings, floor or walls, depending on where vents are located throughout your home. We recommend wearing a dust mask while doing this to protect yourself from any particles that may fall from the vents.
Attach the brush component to your shop-vac or vacuum and thoroughly clean each crevice of the grille. For stubborn grime and dust, grab a stiff bristle brush and use a mixture of warm water and soap to clean.
Reattach grilles and you’re good to go!
