How Commercial HVAC Benefits From BIM/CADD Technologies

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

Before the installation of an HVAC system into a large commercial building, the contractor would need to know the inner workings of the building. Usually, the HVAC system is installed after the main part of the outer skin and its inner skeleton is built. In order to do this, the HVAC contractor must know exactly where and how to start installing the system. Keep reading to learn what BIM and CADD technologies are and how air conditioning companies benefit from the use of BIM and CADD technologies, which help them determine how to install an HVAC system around the skeleton of the building.

Commercial HVAC Benefits

Building Information Modeling (BIM)

Building Information Modeling, or BIM, is, according to the U.S. National Building Information Model Standard Project Committee, “a digital representation of physical and functional characteristics of a facility. A BIM is a shared knowledge resource for information about a facility forming a reliable basis for decisions during its life-cycle; defined as existing from earliest conception to demolition.”

Commercial HVAC companies tend to have their own BIM/CADD departments that incorporate BIM technology to ensure correct fabrication, coordination, and installation. Using BIM also shortens installation time of the HVAC system and allows for better coordination.

Computer-Aided Design and Drafting (CADD)

Most everyone in the computing, manufacturing and architecture industries have heard of computer-aided design and drafting (CADD). Computer aided design is the use of computers to aid in the creation and modification of a design. The CAD editors produce files to print, machining and manufacturing operations as an output. CAD programs that are utilized in commercial HVAC processes include Drawtech Ductwork System, AutoCAD, NavisWorks, and Cad-Duct just to name a few. In HVAC contracting, CADD technology is used in the fabrication of the air ducts, vents, and the shape of the ducts and vents.
