Air Conditioning Myths

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

Everyone enjoys providing their input as to what will save you money on your utility bills every month. Although there are many tips and tricks to keeping your air conditioner running smoothly and your energy bills low, a lot of them simply don’t work.

Here’s a look at the few tips that we found to be unsuccessful:

Facts and Myth

Myth: You save money by turning your AC off when you leave the house.

Reality:

When your home gets hot your air conditioner has to work extra hard to cool it down to a comfortable temperature. Raising the temperature on your thermostat by just a few degrees will be ideal for saving you money when you are not home. However, if the temperature is set too high, it will cost more to run the air conditioner until it cools to a comfortable temperature again. Rather than turning your AC off entirely or constantly adjusting the settings on your system, we recommend investing in a programmable thermostat.

Myth: It’s cheaper to keep your AC at the same temperature all day.

Reality:

When you leave the house, it is a good idea to raise the temperature setting by just a few degrees if you tend to keep your air at a lower temperature. This will give your air conditioner a break from running constantly to keep a low temperature.

Myth: Keeping fans on will keep the AC from running as much.

Reality:

Fans are great for helping circulate the cool air, but they don’t actually emit cool air and are only useful if you are in the room. Turn off fans when you are not in the room to conserve energy.

Myth: Dropping the temperature extra low will cool your home faster.

Reality:

Most AC units run at one speed which means that regardless of how low you set the temperature, it won’t make the time go by any faster for your home to cool. If anything, it will only make your air conditioner run longer and waste energy.

Myth: Routine maintenance is a waste of money.

Reality:

Scheduling routine maintenance can save you a lot of money on repairs in the long run and will ensure that your air conditioner is running smoothly to keep your utility bills low. Better yet, when you sign up for a maintenance agreement with us, you’ll get to take advantage of these great benefits:
