10 DIY Cleaning Products for the Whole House

When it comes to maintaining good air quality in your home, overusing chemical household cleaners is not going to help you get there. A house that smells clean doesn’t always mean that it’s a safe breathing zone. Fortunately, avoiding toxic chemicals in cleaning solutions is easier (and way cheaper) than you think. Follow this guide for creating the most effective and safe cleaning solutions for your whole house.

The Cleaners

The Basics

If you are new to DIY cleaning products, the following are ingredients you will want to have in stock for different variations of green cleaning products for your home:

  • Baking soda

  • White vinegar

  • Rubbing alcohol

  • Vodka

  • Dish soap

  • Essential oils, like tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus, or lemongrass

  • Castile soap

  • Fresh herbs, citrus, or citrus peels

  • Water


Baking soda


1. All Purpose Essential-Oil Cleaner

Materials:

¾ cup water

¼ cup rubbing alcohol

5-10 drops of your favorite essential oil

1 tablespoon dish soap

Directions: Combine all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Mix well before spraying the surface. Wipe using a cloth or paper towel. This cleaner will be effective all around the house but try to avoid cleaning glass to prevent streaks!



White vinegar


2. Fresh Lemon Degreaser

Materials:

2 cups water

2 tablespoons lemon juice

½ teaspoon Castile soap

1 tablespoon baking soda

Directions: Combine all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Shake well and spray on all surfaces to remove any grease or stickiness. Avoid using on wood. Wipe down with a cloth or paper towel after use.


Rubbing Alcohol


3. Glass Cleaner

Materials:

2 cups water

2 tablespoons white vinegar

2 tablespoons rubbing alcohol

5 drops peppermint essential oil

Directions: Combine all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Shake well to mix. For best results, spray the solution onto a microfiber cloth before applying it to the surface.


Glass Cleaner


4. Disinfectant

Materials:

1 ½ cups water

½ cup white vinegar

½ cup vodka

10 drops lavender essential oil

10 drops lemon essential oil

Directions: Combine all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Shake the bottle until the ingredients are combined. Spray the surface and let stand for 10-15 minutes. Wipe down the surface using a cloth or paper towel.


Spoons

5. Chrome Cleaner

Materials:

2 cups water

3 tablespoons white vinegar

½ teaspoon castile soap

Directions: Combine all ingredients together in a spray bottle. Shake well to combine. Spray onto the surface and let it stand for 10-15 minutes before wiping down the surface with a damp cloth. Polish chrome with a dry cloth afterward for added shine.


Cloves

6. Kitchen Scrub

Materials:

¼ cup dish soap

¼ cup baking soda

5 drops clove essential oil

3 drops water

Directions: Combine all the ingredients together in a bowl. Apply to a sponge and scrub down the surface. Wipe the surface afterward with a damp cloth.


Fruits

7. Sink Scrub

Materials:

2 cups baking soda

10 drops lemon essential oil

10 drops clove essential oil

1 tablespoon Castile soap

1 teaspoon water

Directions: Combine the baking soda with essential oils and sprinkle on the sink. Squirt Castile soap and a few drops of water onto the surface and scrub using a sponge or bristle brush. Wipe off the surface afterward with a wet cloth and run water in the sink to rinse thoroughly.


Cleaning Surface

8. Shower and Tub Cleaner

Materials:

1 cup water

¼ cup white vinegar

Directions: Combine the ingredients together in a microwave safe bowl and heat for 30-60 seconds. Remove the ingredients and pour them in a spray bottle. Spray the shower and tub and let the solution sit for 5-10 minutes before wiping it off with a cloth.

9. Mold and Mildew Remover

Materials:

2 cups water

2 teaspoons tea-tree oil

Directions: Combine the ingredients together in a spray bottle. Spray any surface that has mold or mildew and wipe clean using a damp cloth. Apply tea tree oil to the surface afterwards to ensure mold prevention.

10. Hardwood Floor Cleaner

Materials:

½ cup white vinegar

1 gallon warm water

2-3 drops lemon essential oil

Directions: Combine the ingredients together in a bucket. Mop as normal by applying to floors and repeating.
