Earth Day Energy Efficient Air Conditioning Tips

Updated: Feb 10, 2023

Energy efficiency should be a topic near the top of our interests throughout the year, but when Earth Day comes around every April 22nd it seems to renew interest in how we can be less caustic to our environmental resources. Air conditioning systems are a great place to start on the road to being more energy efficient.

Nearly half (46%) of all home energy use stems from heating and air conditioning, maybe even more during the hot summer months here in central Florida, so whether you cool a home or commercial business space it will do you well to keep these tips in mind this Earth Day and after.

Commercial AC Energy Efficiency Tips

Cooling a commercial building requires a significant amount of tonnage and energy. The advanced air conditioning systems that are required of these large buildings mean that energy efficiency needs to be kept in mind even more so than a residential AC project. Our commercial HVAC design teams use sophisticated BIM/CADD technologies during pre-construction to ensure that the office space uses only the amount of power that it needs to heat or cool the space efficiently.

A tip for better commercial AC energy efficiency after the right systems are installed by a team of professionals like ours is to keep AC maintenance as a high priority. A well-maintained heating and cooling system will always be more energy efficient. We have Planned Maintenance plans available to take the pressure off of remembering when it is time for commercial AC maintenance. Another energy efficiency tip for your commercial air conditioner is to fix any issues that come up right away before they get worse and become an energy drain.

Home Energy Efficient AC Tips

Energy efficient air conditioning in a residential space like your home is important because no one likes to pay more for utility bills than they have to, right? Aside from high power bills, an air conditioner with low energy efficiency is bad for our environment and could be bad for your health as well.

Check and change your AC’s air filter every one to three months depending on the dirt level that can be seen in the filter. This not only helps improve the efficiency of your air conditioner because it will not have to work as hard to pull and filter air, but it also improves the indoor air quality in your home. Be sure the area around your outdoor unit is always free from obstructions like tree or plant fibers, which can make your system work harder than it should. A full AC maintenance check-up once or twice per year will also ensure your system is running at maximum efficiency. A thermostat that is programmable will also help your air conditioner be more energy efficient because it will allow you to set and change the temperature in your home from wherever you may be.

If you feel that your home is losing air conditioned air due to air duct issues you should also have them inspected by a ductwork specialist. Old windows, doors and other openings in your home could also be sources of energy inefficiency and should be upgraded to energy efficient versions.
